FAQs

Preserved Moss Art – Frequently Asked Questions

What is preserved moss?

Preserved moss is real, natural moss that has been treated with a plant-based glycerin preservation process to maintain its softness, color, and shape. Unlike live moss, preserved moss does not require water, sunlight, or ongoing maintenance, making it ideal for indoor décor.

Is preserved moss real or artificial?

Preserved moss is 100% real moss, not artificial. It is harvested sustainably and preserved to stop the growth cycle while keeping its natural appearance and texture.

Why does preserved moss feel soft and lifelike?

Preserved moss stays soft because it is treated with glycerin oil and non-toxic natural pigments. Glycerin replaces the moss’s natural moisture, allowing it to remain flexible and plush for many years without drying out.

How long does preserved moss last?

With proper indoor conditions, preserved moss décor typically lasts 6 to 10+ years.

For best longevity:

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight

  • Avoid high humidity or moisture

  • Keep indoors at stable room temperatures

Indirect sunlight is completely safe and will not damage preserved moss.

Does preserved moss need water or maintenance?

No. Preserved moss never needs watering, misting, or fertilizing. It is permanently preserved and maintenance-free.

Can preserved moss be placed in sunlight?

Limited direct sunlight (around 4–5 hours per day) is acceptable, but indirect light is ideal. Extended exposure to strong direct sunlight may cause colors to fade over time.

Preserved moss is especially well-suited for low-light areas where live plants would struggle.

Can preserved moss be used outdoors?

Preserved moss is designed for indoor use only. Exposure to outdoor elements such as rain, humidity, wind, or strong sun can damage the moss and shorten its lifespan.

How do you clean preserved moss?

To clean preserved moss:

  • Use a blow dryer on a cool setting, held about 12 inches away

  • Gently remove dust as needed

  • A soft brush may also be used

Some light shedding after unpacking is normal and will stop shortly after installation.

Is preserved moss safe for homes with pets?

Yes. Preserved moss is non-toxic and non-allergenic, making it safe for homes with pets and children. However, moss art is decorative and not intended to be handled or ingested.

Where can preserved moss art be used?

Preserved moss art works beautifully in:

  • Living rooms and bedrooms

  • Offices and commercial spaces

  • Bathrooms and basements

  • Kitchens, foyers, and hallways

It can be displayed as framed wall art, shelf décor, or large statement moss walls.

Are your moss frames handmade?

Yes. All of our preserved moss frames and panels are handcrafted in-house. Frames are built from raw wood and finished before the moss is arranged by hand in our Chicago studio. Each piece is custom and made to order.

Why is there a processing time for moss art?

Preserved moss art is custom-made, not mass-produced. Frames are built, finished, and filled by hand.

Typical lead times:

  • Moss Frames: 4–5 weeks

  • Moss Bowls: 14–21 days

  • Custom & Commercial Projects: 28–60 days

Estimated processing times are listed on each product page.

How is preserved moss shipped?

Orders are shipped via UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, or freight carriers, depending on size and destination. All artwork is carefully packed to prevent damage during transit.

I noticed Moss Shedding, is this normal?

Yes — light moss shedding during unboxing or inside the package is completely normal and happens due to movement during transit. Once your moss art is installed or placed in its final location, shedding will naturally stop after a few days.

What is your return policy?

Because each piece is custom and made to order, returns are not accepted. If there is an issue with your order, please contact us — we are always happy to help resolve it.

What if my moss art arrives damaged?

While damage during transit is rare, please inspect your artwork upon delivery. If you notice any damage, contact us right away and hold onto the original shipping box and all packaging, as this is required to submit a claim with the shipping insurance provider. We’ll guide you through the next steps and help resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
