Nearly every question we get by email comes down to something a photograph cannot answer: how deep is it, how does it catch the light, what does it actually feel like in a room.
Four days in December are the easiest answer to all of it. We are returning to the One of a Kind Show at The Mart in Chicago, and you can stand in front of the work.

Why seeing it in person matters
Preserved moss has real dimension. Mood moss forms cushioned mounds that sit proud of the frame; reindeer moss is fine and branching and catches light completely differently. Layered together they throw small shadows that shift as you walk past.
None of that survives a product photo. People who have only seen moss art on a screen often expect something flat, or assume it must be artificial. Standing in front of it settles both questions in about three seconds.
It also settles the size question, which is the one we spend the most time on by email. Judging a 36-inch frame against your own living room wall is genuinely hard from a listing photo. It is easy when the piece is in front of you.

The last one matters more than it sounds. Choosing a frame finish from a swatch on a screen is the step most people find hardest in a custom order.
If you are planning a custom piece
The show is a good place to start a custom conversation, because the two things that usually slow it down are both solved by being in the room: you can see the material, and we can talk through your wall in person.
Bring what you have. A straight-on photo of the wall and a rough measurement is enough to get a sensible conversation going. If you know the dimensions you are working with, better still — we can tell you on the spot whether a framed piece or a full panel makes more sense, and roughly where the cost lands.
No obligation attached to any of that. Most of the custom work we build starts as a conversation months before anyone orders anything.

December is the reason most people walk through the door, and moss art suits a specific kind of problem: the person who has taste, already owns everything, and does not want another candle.
Each piece is handmade in our Chicago studio from real preserved moss. It never needs watering, it does not need a window, and it holds its appearance for years. For someone who likes the idea of plants more than the reality of keeping them alive, it lands well.

The show is mostly a retail audience, but a fair number of the commercial projects we build start with a designer or a business owner walking the floor in December.
If that is you, it is worth coming with more than a photo. Wall dimensions, ceiling height, the lighting situation, and any specification the project has to meet — fire rating, cleanability, humidity — are the things that decide whether a framed piece, a modular panel system, or a full wall is the right answer. We would rather tell you a space is wrong for preserved moss at a show than after an install.

Getting there
The Mart sits on the river at the north edge of the Loop, and it is one of the easier venues in the city to reach without a car. The Brown and Purple lines stop at Merchandise Mart directly, and the building connects to the station.
If you drive, there is paid parking in the building and several garages within a block or two. December weekends at The Mart are busy, so allow more time than the map suggests.

Our studio is at 2113 W. Armitage Ave, Floor 1, in Chicago, open Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm. You are welcome to come and see the work there, and it is a quieter setting for a custom conversation than a show floor in December.

Does moss art need any maintenance?
No watering, no sunlight, no trimming. Occasional dusting is all it asks for. Keep it indoors, dry, and out of prolonged direct sun.
