One thing worth knowing: reindeer moss is not actually a moss. It is technically a lichen — a partnership between a fungus and an alga. It has been called reindeer moss for so long that the name stuck, and it behaves like moss in preserved artwork, but the botanical distinction is real. It is also why its texture is so different from mood moss.

Neither is better — they serve different purposes.

Both types are fully preserved, which means neither needs water, sunlight, soil, or trimming. Kept indoors in stable conditions, both typically hold their appearance for around 5 to 10 years, often longer.

Two practical differences worth knowing:

• Reindeer moss is more sensitive to handling, so it is better placed where it will not be brushed against regularly

Both are non-toxic, but neither is meant to be chewed or eaten — they are decorative materials, so keep pieces where pets and small children cannot pull at them.
