How We Build Our Moss Frames From Scratch — The Craft Behind the Art
It Starts With the Frame
Behind every moss design is a custom-built wood frame — and at The Moss Shop, we don’t outsource a single step. We handcraft each frame in-house, starting with raw wood and ending with a fully sealed, gallery-ready piece.
Here’s how we do it.
Step 1: Raw Wood Selection
We source premium wood planks that are strong, stable, and rich in natural grain. Our preferred woods are chosen for their durability, smooth finish, and ability to hold stain beautifully.
We inspect each board for knots, splits, and imperfections before cutting.
Step 2: Precision Cutting & Joining
Each plank is cut to size using miter saws for perfect 45° angles. We create square, rectangular, and round frame forms, depending on the piece.
Corners are joined tightly with wood glue and brad nails for strength and clean seams. For larger frames, we use clamps and reinforcements to ensure long-term durability.
Step 3: Sanding Every Surface
Once joined, the frame is hand-sanded with multiple grits — starting coarse and finishing fine. This smooths any sharp edges, fills tiny seams, and preps the surface for stain.
We also sand the inner edges and back support area to ensure a perfect moss fit.
Step 4: Staining & Poly Sealing
After sanding, each frame is stained by hand. We offer three finishes:
-
Natural Light Brown
-
Walnut Brown
-
Matte Black
The stain brings out the wood grain and adds depth. Once dry, we apply a clear protective polyurethane layer to seal and preserve the finish.
Step 5: Final Prep Before Moss
The finished frame is left to cure before moss is added. This ensures no tackiness, no odor, and a smooth surface for adhesion.
Only once the frame is fully sealed and set do we begin arranging moss — starting with the base layer (usually mood moss) and building texture using reindeer moss, sponge mushrooms, and natural elements.
