How to Order Custom Moss Art: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Go Custom?

Custom moss art allows you to create a piece that fits your space, style, and story. Whether you're decorating your home, upgrading your office, or designing for a client, our made-to-order moss pieces are handcrafted to your exact vision.

At The Moss Shop, every custom project is built in-house — from cutting the wood frames to arranging each piece of preserved moss by hand.

Here’s exactly how the process works.

Step 1: Share Your Vision

We start by understanding your space and goals. You can:

  • Fill out our custom quote form online

  • Email us with your size, color palette, and inspiration images

  • Visit our Chicago studio (by appointment) to explore moss types in person

Let us know where you plan to install it, the look you want (lush, structured, flowing, neutral, vibrant), and any favorite natural elements (sponge mushrooms, ferns, stones, etc).

Step 2: Choose Size, Shape & Frame

We offer square, rectangular, and circular options — or we can create unique shapes to match your concept. Standard or oversized formats available.

Our frames are fully custom and made in-house:

  • Sourced from raw wood

  • Hand-cut, joined, sanded, stained, and poly-sealed in our studio

  • Available in finishes like Natural Light Brown, Walnut Brown, or Matte Black

Step 3: Select Your Moss & Texture

We’ll guide you in choosing from:

  • Mood Moss (plush, dome-shaped, forest green)

  • Reindeer Moss (airy, sponge-like, available in many colors)

  • Sheet Moss (flat and textural)

We often combine multiple moss types for depth. Add-ons like sponge mushrooms, preserved florals, or driftwood are available too.

Step 4: We Build It by Hand

Once the design is approved, our team gets to work:

  • Wood frames are built from scratch

  • Cement bowls are hand-cast and cured

  • Moss is trimmed, cleaned, and placed organically

Each piece is arranged with natural movement and balance — no two are ever the same.

Typical processing time: 3–4 weeks, depending on complexity and size.

Step 5: Shipping & Delivery

All orders are carefully packed and shipped via UPS Ground or FedEx Ground. We use secure packaging methods to protect your moss art in transit. Local pickup is also available from our Chicago studio.
