Large artwork deserves a secure and professional installation method. A French cleat hanging system is one of the most reliable ways to mount heavy frames, moss wall art, and decorative panels. It provides strong support, keeps artwork level, and allows pieces to sit flush against the wall.
At The Moss Shop, we often recommend French cleat systems for larger preserved moss artwork because they distribute weight evenly and make installation much easier for homeowners, designers, and installers.
A French cleat is a two-piece mounting system made from wood or metal. One cleat attaches to the wall and the other attaches to the back of the artwork. Each piece is cut at an angle so they lock together when the artwork is lifted and placed onto the wall cleat.
This angled design allows gravity to pull the artwork downward, securing it tightly against the wall while distributing the weight across a wider surface.
A French cleat hanging system uses two interlocking angled boards—one mounted to the wall and one attached to the artwork. When the frame is lifted and placed onto the wall cleat, the pieces lock together securely, distributing weight evenly and keeping artwork level and flush against the wall.
French cleats are widely used by galleries, interior designers, and installers because they provide a reliable and flexible mounting solution for large artwork.
This is particularly useful for larger decorative pieces such as preserved moss artwork from our All Moss Frames collection, which are designed to create bold visual statements while remaining securely mounted.
Before beginning installation, gather the following tools:
Use a stud finder to locate studs behind the drywall. Mounting the wall cleat directly into studs provides the strongest support, especially for large artwork.
If studs are not available in the correct location, use heavy-duty drywall anchors rated for the weight of your artwork.
Measure the height where you want the artwork to sit. Mark a horizontal line using a level so the cleat is perfectly straight.
This line will indicate where the bottom edge of the wall cleat will be installed.
Position the wall cleat along the marked line with the angled edge facing upward and away from the wall.
Drill screws through the cleat and into the wall studs or anchors. Double-check with a level before tightening all screws.
A properly installed cleat should feel solid with no movement.
The second cleat attaches to the back of your artwork frame.
The angled edge should face downward toward the wall so it can lock onto the installed cleat.
Make sure it is centered and securely fastened with wood screws.
Large pieces such as natural preserved moss panels from our Natural & Organic Moss Designs collection benefit from this mounting method because it supports the entire frame width.
Lift the artwork slightly above the wall cleat and gently lower it into place.
The angled pieces will slide together and lock automatically.
Once mounted, the artwork can still slide slightly left or right along the cleat, allowing you to center it perfectly.
French cleats are extremely strong when installed correctly.
This makes them ideal for larger decorative pieces such as framed preserved moss artwork from our Rustic Moss Frames or large statement pieces from our All Moss Frames collection.
French cleat systems are ideal for mounting artwork in a variety of environments:
Businesses often use this method when installing custom logo panels such as our Custom Moss Logo Walls, ensuring the installation is both secure and easy to remove if needed.
Following these tips ensures your artwork remains secure and properly aligned for years.

Yes. French cleats are one of the best mounting methods for heavy frames because they distribute weight across the entire cleat rather than relying on a single hook or wire.
Yes, but it is best to install them into wall studs whenever possible. If studs are not available, heavy-duty wall anchors rated for the artwork’s weight should be used.
Artwork can slide slightly left or right along the cleat, which allows for easy centering. However, it will remain firmly locked onto the wall cleat.
Yes. Because the cleat runs horizontally, it naturally keeps artwork level and prevents tilting that can happen with traditional picture wires.
Yes. One of the advantages of a French cleat system is that artwork can simply be lifted off the wall when needed, making repositioning or cleaning easy.
A French cleat hanging system is one of the safest and most professional ways to install large artwork. It provides strength, stability, and flexibility while keeping your piece perfectly level and flush against the wall.
